A New Generation of Philanthropists

We learned about organic vegetable farming in class, so we decided to build a mushroom farm of our own. Now we sell our mushrooms and help out our families.
-Sai, Grade 7 Student at Mechai Pattana School

Not only are students educated at the school, they also become actively involved in the selection of the teachers, the purchasing decisions, and even the design of their own school uniforms.  While the education is free of charge to these underprivileged children, they must perform 1 hour of community service for every school lunch.  The operating costs of the school (approximately $US2,000 per student) are supported by a wide array of social enterprises that have been established by the founder, Mechai Viravaidya.  Students understand the link between entrepreneurship and philanthropy, and they start many businesses of their own.  The children are also tasked with monitoring and proposing  improvements in the quality of life for the most vulnerable people in their communities (i.e. the elderly, the disabled, and HIV-positive individuals
